Black History Month Activities: Black Fashion Designers Exhibit at FIT
HAPPY BLACK HISTORY MONTH!!
I wanted to take a real quick second to just drop these pictures I took from the incredible Black Fashion Designers exhibit put on by the lovely people at FIT. Apparently this has been running since December 6th of last year and will remain at the museum until May 16th of this year. I had absolutely no idea (sheesh I really have to get out and do more) and in case you didn’t either, you have a lot of time to go check it out! This would make a great addition to your list of Black History Month activities!
They do a beautiful job of covering generations of work from designers of African descent and also shed some light on how race has previously and currently affects fashion. With black designers only making up approximately 1% of designers covered by VogueRunway.com (the most comprehensive website online for viewing fashion week collections from around the world,) it is quite apparent that we still unfortunately have a ways to go in equality in the fashion realm. There were some recognizable designs worn by celebrities like Kim Kardashian and I was shocked that the designers weren’t more widely recognized!
I’m so incredibly proud of where I come from and feel so honored to share in the rich culture and expression that stem from generations of struggle and oppression. We are a brilliant, talented, beautiful group of people and I think this exhibit does a good job of sharing that with the world. If you’re in NYC, especially midtown west, stop by and check it out! How many other times in your life will you be in the presence of an Olivier Rousteing gown (drooooooool.)
On a sort of different note, it was very interesting to me to photograph just clothes on mannequins? It inspired me to really start working on my photography which I think is kind of cool! Stay tuned for more posts and comments on that!
Does anyone else have any cool ideas for ways to celebrate/appreciate Black History Month? Let me know in the comments below!
Until Next Time!
